Surviving the Streets: A Descent into Darkness From what was a fantasy became reality for me, in doing so I lost everything, my home, job and family. I now live in a bedsit in the red-light district and now have nothing not even my self respect. I did the street walking at first being new and a bit younger I could still get a few customers but now I have to rely on more extreme ways to earn my money. It used to be so easy before just walking the street for several hours getting a reasonable amount of money to pay my pimp and having a little for myself. He would beat me when I didn’t 'pay my way' and threatened to 'sell' me to someone else if I didn’t work harder and longer. I told him I would do anything to avoid that which enabled him to select more 'dirty' work for me to do. It was a Thursday morning when I was taken to the back door of an old shop, near a Mosque, run by some Pakistanis. In the room was an a dirty stained mattress on the floor, I was made to strip down to my knickers and my clothes were taken away by my pimp 'You won’t be needing these' he said as he left. What I didn’t know was that for the next 3 days I wouldn’t leave that room except to use the piss and shit stained toilet to relieve myself and later I found to be my only supply of water! …and then things took a turn
